The firmness of a wall depends very much on the strength of its foundation. In the same way, the firmness of our faith depends greatly on the strength of its base, which is accurate knowledge of God’s Word and reliance on the leading of the Holy Spirit. If we read and study the Bible daily, our faith will become strong. Like a strong wall, such faith will shield us from the influence of wicked spirits. ‘For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?’ (1 John 5:4-5).
Cultivating humility is absolutely essential for Christians. Each of us is blessed with various gifts—whether these have to do with natural abilities, experience or knowledge that we have acquired. However, our humility must exceed our gifts. Otherwise, our assets may become liabilities. We should beware of becoming fertile ground for the growth of the seed of haughtiness. We should neither resent correction nor resist being taught by others. We should certainly not cling proudly to our own ideas when we learn that these are out of harmony with the present leadings of the Holy Spirit. As long as we remain humble, we are useful to the LORD.
As we consider the ways that God supports His people during these last days, we see that He is the best Friend we could ever have. We delight in our relationship with Him, knowing that He loves us, teaches us and corrects us. Yes, trials of faith will continue to come our way. But unshakable faith in God will carry us through. James wrote: ‘My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.’ (James 1:2-4). ———————To be continued.
